Amistad Replica Making Historic 14,000-Mile Journey; Reconciliation Offering October 7

September 28, 2007 - Disciples News Service

Freedom Schooner AmistadThe voyage of the Freedom Schooner Amistad recently made a celebrated stop in London. The Amistad, a replica of a 19th century slave ship, is on a 14,000-mile journey to celebrate the bicentennial of the abolition of the slave trade. One of the sponsors of the ship's voyage is Reconciliation Ministry, the special ministry of the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) working to eliminate the primary causes of racism in North America.

The Amistad was the focal point of a parade along the River Thames and it sailed under the famed Tower Bridge. Among the resources for the observance of this year's Reconciliation Ministry Offering that will be received on Oct. 7, is the "Winds of Change" discussion guide of the 1997 movie "Amistad," a film about the ship. To download the curriculum, go to: www.reconciliationmission.org/resources/amistad. The Amistad’s next port of call is Lisbon, Portugal, where it’s expected to be Oct. 13-21. To see a blog chronicling the ship’s voyage and view its current position, go to: www.amistadamerica.org
